Project Details

House 52 in Birkirkara is a beautifully reimagined house of character that carefully balances traditional Maltese elements with modern design and detailing. The project involved a partial rebuild and full interior reconfiguration, with a focus on structural integrity, refined finishes, and handcrafted interventions throughout.

One of the key architectural elements in this restoration was the restoration of xorok and kileb. These traditional ceiling structures were carefully dismantled, treated, and rebuilt using matching stone and lime-based mortars. Each piece was either restored or replaced with hand-cut stone to ensure visual and structural continuity.

A custom-designed staircase serves as a centrepiece of the interior, combining traditional proportions with sleek, modern detailing. The staircase is framed by bespoke metal railing work, fabricated to echo classic forms while introducing a minimalist, contemporary touch. This balance of old and new continues throughout the home, with neutral materials and finishes that respect the building’s original character.

Stone walls were cleaned and consolidated, and new services, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, were integrated invisibly within the fabric of the building. Every junction, joint, and finish was executed with precision, ensuring that the home remains both beautiful and functional for years to come.

This home is a strong example of classic meets modern — where heritage is not just preserved but enhanced through thoughtful design, architectural detail, and considered craftsmanship. House 52 is more than a renovation; it is a statement in how Malta’s most loved buildings can be respectfully reborn.
